Yawning Face 🥱

Wide-open mouth frozen mid-yawn, often with closed eyes and a tear drop at the corner—the yawning face captures that involuntary, slightly vulnerable moment of yawning. The design is instantly recognizable and unmistakably about sleepiness or boredom.

People use this to signal they're tired and heading to bed, or that something's putting them to sleep (literally or figuratively). "Goodnight," "This is boring," or "I need to crash"—the yawning face covers all these bases. Unlike the tired face, which is more general exhaustion, yawning is specifically about that drowsy, head-nodding stage of sleepiness.

It's also used ironically or sarcastically—when something is so dull it's making you yawn, or when you want to mock someone's boring story. In memes and group chats, it's popular for reactions to tedious content or announcements. The tear can amplify the sentiment of genuine sadness-through-boredom too.

This emoji arrived later than most—approved in Unicode Emoji 12 in 2019—but quickly became essential for sleep and boredom contexts. It's more specific than tired, capturing that precise biological moment of the yawn itself.
