A figure with a clearly downturned mouth and unhappy facial expression conveys disappointment, frustration, or annoyance. The design is simple and unmistakable—the frown is the focal point, making the emotion immediately readable at a glance.

This gender-neutral frowning person is used to express disapproval, frustration, or sadness in response to bad news, disappointing situations, or something upsetting. People send it when they're disgruntled about a plan falling through, annoyed by a friend's comment, or reacting to frustrating life circumstances. It's gentler than an angry emoji but clearer than a mere sad face.

On social media and in messaging, it often appears in threads where someone's complaining or venting. It can also be used to react to someone else's complaint—a "yeah, that sucks" kind of gesture. The emoji works well in sarcastic contexts too, especially when someone is feigning disappointment.

The generic person-frowning variant has been in emoji since the very beginning, approved as part of Unicode Emoji 0.6 in 2010, with male and female versions added later in 2016 to provide gender-specific options. All three variants remain popular for expressing mild to moderate dissatisfaction.
