A solid square, usually red or dark-colored, the stop button is the most authoritative of the media control symbols. Its blocky, filled design conveys finality and absolute cessation—this is a hard stop, not a pause.

In casual messaging, people use the stop button to firmly end a topic, halt a conversation, or say "that's enough." It carries more weight than a pause—it's not "hold on," it's "we're done here." You might see it used when someone wants to shut down gossip, stop a joke that's gone too far, or put a definitive end to a debate. The filled square design makes it feel more aggressive or serious than other media controls.

Beyond literal playback, it signals drawing a line, closing a chapter, or refusing to engage further. There's an element of authority in the stop button that makes it useful for boundary-setting in digital communication. It's gentler than an angry emoji but firmer than words.

The symbol's design has remained virtually unchanged since its introduction. Approved as part of Unicode Emoji 0.7 in 2010, the stop button endures as a universal command symbol across devices, from old VCRs to modern streaming apps.
